X-linked conditions are most often carried on the X chromosome. Since males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY), a single copy of a mutated gene on their X chromosome will express the condition. In contrast, females have two X chromosomes (XX), so they can be carriers if they have one mutated gene while often not expressing the condition if the other X chromosome is normal. This pattern results in X-linked conditions being more prevalent in males.
