Barbara McClintock was an American cytogeneticist who made groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of genetic regulation and mobile genetic elements. She is best known for her discovery of "jumping genes," or transposons, which can move within and between genomes, fundamentally altering genetic research. In 1983, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her pioneering work in genetics. McClintock's research has had a lasting impact on molecular Biology, genetics, and our understanding of genetic variation.
