Taira no Masakado claimed the title of "Shinno," which translates to "New Emperor." This title reflected his ambitions to establish himself as a ruler independent of the central government in Kyoto, especially during a time of political instability in Japan. His rebellion against the imperial authority in the early 10th century ultimately led to his deification as a folk hero and a protector deity in later Japanese culture.
