Monitors are among the largest of lizards, and most species have sharp claws and teeth to kill prey and defend themselves. Their muscular necks and tails help make them very strong against predators.

Some species also have venom glands and will let it seep into their bites, causing a bitten animal to suffer a harmful drop in its blood pressure.
