Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on June 28, 1914, primarily due to nationalist motivations. He was a member of the Serbian nationalist group known as the Black Hand, which sought to promote the unification of South Slavic peoples and resist Austro-Hungarian rule over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The assassination was seen as a way to strike against imperial oppression and ignite a movement for independence, ultimately contributing to the outbreak of World War I.
