When was Modern Short Stories created?

Most say that this genre began in the time of Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorn in the earlier 1800's. Most of the first short stories were made to be published in magazines in pieces that were released monthly so that people would have by the next edition in order to continue their read.
