How does pepper spray sting your eyes?

Your eyes can feel like they are burning and they swell up, sometimes to the point of shutting completely from the swelling. That's why they say that pepper spray can blind you. The pepper doesn't actually make your eyes blind, the pepper makes your eyes swollen and therefore impairs your vision since they are closed.
