Why does my1997 VW Cabrio keep stalling dist cap plugs changed Service station is stumped Any ideas?

I would replace the fuel filter. It might be letting just enough fuel by to start the engine, but not let it run very long. When the engine starves itself out (stalls) a little more fuel trickles through the plugged filter so you can restart the engine.
