Augustus won the Final Civil War of the Roman Republic, thus ending a long period of civil wars which tore the Republic apart and left the Romans exhausted. Augustus established absolute rule by emperors and was the first Roman emperor. He had a tight grip of the government and politics of Rome and restored stability. This led to what historians have called the Pax Romana, a 207-year period of relative political stability in the Roman Empire which also led to the growth of thriving trading networks around the empire and prosperity.
