What was the outcome to the Battle of Midway?

The US scored a decisive victory over the Japanese by sinking four of her aircraft carriers and retaining posession of Midway Island. The losses effectively put an end to Japan's ability to wage an offensive war and she was forced to turn to defensive measures for the rest of the conflict.
