Why do people pull out the weeds in their garden?

Elimination of vegetation deemed unfriendly or unproductive describes the reason why people pull out the weeds in their gardens. Weeds typically get defined as plants that are not where their owner wants them or whose value is non-existent, unappreciated or unknown. The unfriendliness reflects the competition of weeds -- with their fast growth and re-establishment, low maintenance, multiple methods of reproducing and spreading and tolerances of extreme light, moisture, nutrient and temperature extremes -- with the gardener's edibles, grasses and ornamentals.
