Why are fossils of whole animals and plants rarely found?

Fossils are not found as when an animal dies its bones decay through millions of years. And to survive that long it should be deep under the earth where it is not exposed to wind sunlight and water. If it is exposed it will decay quickly leaving no trace due to the environment and bacteria
