A dark-bodied, red-marked insect that predators need to avoid as a bad-tasting meal is what the boxelder bug looks like. The insect in question (Boisea trivittata) may be black- or dark brown-bodied with black or dark brown antennae, head and legs, with black or dark brown, red-veined wings and with red-marked abdomens. The eggs will change from yellow to red while the immature stages as nymphs will be bright red, with dark antennae and legs.
