Why do male animals fight over female animals?

We can't always know for sure why male animals fight over female animals. Most fighting between two males over a female happens durng mating season. But of course--as in any fight--only one male can win. Sometimes, though, not just males, but females too, will fight over territory, food, and sometimes animals will just fight each other when they don't know who the other animals is.

Why do human males fight over females? It's pretty much the same thing! Hope this helps!
