Why do you think there was no allied attempt to approach Germany from the north?

The Germans controlled the area and to enter Europe with a large enough force a beachhead was the best action. The Germans knew that the allies would attempt a beachhead but not exactly where. The English set up a decoy base so German spies would report back a wrong mass of troops and supplies.
