How does technology cause job loss?

Progressions in technology has stimulated great economic debate as the need for human labour is being increasing replaced by capital equipment. The fundamental underlying nature of the concept is that as machines are able to create other machines, the need for human workers is lessened, and consequently, technology leads to loss of jobs.
