When did cell phones become popular?

The first cell phone to be made was in 1981. It was launched in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden and was called the Nordic Mobile Telephone.

Cell phones first became widely available in the early 1990s when newer technology made it more affordable, but it wasn't until the late 1990s (after 1997/98) when they became increasingly common.
