When do you use than or then in a sentence?

You use "than" when you're comparing one thing to another. In all other case, use "then." For example, I like Pizza better than steak. If you like steak better than pizza, then you must be crazy. I'd rather play Video Games than do my homework, but if I don't get my homework done, then my parents will ground me.
