Baby koalas, called joeys, are born in very small numbers, typically one per female during each breeding season. The breeding season occurs from September to February, and after a gestation period of about 35 days, the joey continues to develop in the mother's pouch for around six months before emerging. After leaving the pouch, the joey stays with its mother for an additional six months to learn to eat eucalyptus leaves and gain independence.
