What is a chromatic note?

A chromatic note is a pitch that is not part of the diatonic scale of the key in which a piece of music is composed. In Western music, chromatic notes are typically derived from the twelve pitches of the chromatic scale, which includes all the notes, both natural and altered (sharps and flats).
