What does preforated leather mean?

Perforated leather is a material on which patterns of holes are punched by pins or cut by laser. It seems probable this was originally more function than fashion: it serves the function of letting air into an otherwise enclosed piece of leather clothing (like a glove) and prevents the interior from overheating. Nowadays, it's a design element often associated with a sporty look.
