What is wainscoting?

Wainscot is a decorative wall embellishment that was used to protect the lower portion of walls by early English settlers in America. Home then lacked proper foundations and lower walls were prone to water damage. These days the style has resurfaced as a fashionable way to decorate a home's walls.
