Why should animals be kept in captivity?

Well I am totally against putting animals in captivity but sometimes you need to do it. Like if the animal is a recue animal then you should. But some people just take animals from the wild and its like someone coming to your house and kidnapping you! Its not good and people shouldn't do that but like I said somtimes you have to

It greatly depends on the situation and context the term is used in. Zoos and nature reserves are places where animals are kept in an enclosed space for education and conservation purposes. They enable people to see beautiful wild animals that they would never otherwise get to see, and educates the general public about the animals and the threats to their natural habitats. Some species, without captive breeding, would be long extinct such as Przewalski's horse which no longer exists in the wild.

Zoos and nature reserves today are constantly monitored to make sure the animals are in the best health and happiness. Each enclosure is specially designed for the animal living in it to keep it as close to its natural habitat as possible. Remember - these animals have been born in captivity. They do not miss "the wild" as they do not know what it is. This a far cry from the zoos in the past that were cold, concrete cages.

Taking (often endangered and exotic) animals from the wild to sell them off as pets or to be used as cheap street entertainment and the like is what sparks much controversy, and is also illegal in many countries. It is undoubtly cruel as these animals are shut up in cages too small or chained most of their lives or until they are sold on. Conservation Trusts like WWF are constantly battling this trade.

Finally, people much remember that your own pets are kept in captivity, too! Granted, your average pet dog or cat has been bred to be a companion animal for many thousands of years, but in captivity terms any pet, be it dog, cat, hamster, snake, fish or snail is also an animal that is confined in a man-made enviroment.
