The triceratops was first discovered by American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh in 1887. Marsh unearthed the first fossils in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana, which he later named Triceratops horridus. This discovery was part of the "Bone Wars," a period of intense scientific rivalry between Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope. The triceratops has since become one of the most recognized dinosaur species in popular culture.
