How do you type in an area code on a phone?

If the telephone has 12 buttons on it, you press the buttons with the digits on them, in the same order as the digits of the area code.

If the telephone has a round dial with 10 holes in it, you put your index finger in the hole above the digit and pull the dial around clockwise until you hit the metal hook. Then remove your finger, let the dial spin back around to its starting position, and repeat for the next digit.
