Guy Fawkes did not burn down Parliament; rather, he was part of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, which aimed to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James I to end Protestant rule in England. The plotters sought to replace the king with a Catholic monarch. Fawkes was tasked with guarding the explosives placed in the cellar of Parliament but was arrested before the plan could be executed. The failed plot led to Fawkes becoming a symbol of dissent against government oppression.
