Erythromycin was discovered in 1949 by the American microbiologist Dr. Eli Lilly and his team while studying soil samples from the island of Ilocos Norte in the Philippines. They isolated the antibiotic from a strain of the bacterium Saccharopolyspora erythraea, which was later reclassified as Saccharopolyspora. This discovery marked a significant advancement in antibiotic treatment, particularly for patients allergic to penicillin.
