What is a Self contained flat?

In Australia the term 'self contained' refers to the fact that it has all facilities needed to live in, bathroom, kitchen and whatnot.

Usually used when talking about a separate living space still attached or within the same yard as the main house intended for elderly relatives. Eg a granny flat can either be self contained or shared bathroom/kitchen. As they are often added after the house has been built.

I don't know if the term is exactly the same in other countries though.
