Hatha Yoga is the balancing of the sun "Ha" and moon "Tha" energies within the body. To achieve this balance there are 7 practices or steps.
These are 1. Kriyas or cleansing techniques for purification of the body, 2. Asanas or postures for strength and flexibility, 3. Pranayama or breathing practices for lightness, 4. Mudras and Bandhas, locks or seals for steadiness, 5. Pratyahara for the withdrawal of the senses, calmness of the mind, 6. Dhyana or contemplation for perception and 7.
