Thutmose III sought to remove Hatshepsut's name from records to assert his authority and legitimize his rule after her reign. As her stepson and successor, he may have viewed her significant accomplishments and the co-regency as a challenge to his own legitimacy. By erasing her legacy, he aimed to reinforce the notion of male dominance in leadership and strengthen his position as the sole pharaoh. This act of damnatio memoriae was a way to reshape history in favor of his own narrative.
