The Order of the Illuminati was founded in 1776 in Bavaria. The group was seen as an offshoot group of the Enlightenment. In 1777 when Karl Theodor became ruler of Bavaria, he outlawed secret society groups including the Illuminati. Some believe that the Illuminati are still in operation today, controlling world events and holding positions of power. There are societies in the world today who claim to be descended from the orignal Order of the Illuminati or use the name within their initiation and rites ceremonies.

Many fictional works have used the Illuminati name in their works. These include novels such as Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and games such as Tomb Raider.
