Cleopatra came to power by inheritance. She was made co-ruler of Egypt along with her brother in their father's will. After a family feud, Cleo was exiled and her brother the king. A civil war erupted after Caesar arrived and recalled Cleopatra from exile. (This was the famous entrance of Cleopatra wrapped in a rug) After the civil war, Caesar established Cleopatra on the throne and she stayed there for the rest of her life. Her reign would have been unremarkable if it were not for the fact that she used her feminine charms and her personality as diplomatic tools.
