Undeniably, a very large number of terrorists today are practicing muslims who attend their local mosques and perform their regular muslim prayers. The association of Islam with terrorism is often viewed from 3 perspectives.
1 - The act of terror committed in the name of the religion's entity of worship: Terrorists often perform acts of terror while shouting out the name of their god. That would be an open admission that these terrorist acts were committed in the name of the religion.
2 - Religious doctrines or scripts often reveal the instructions to their followers. In the case of Islam, many of these dogmas are contained in the book of Q'uran and many of the hadeeths. Unless one chooses to look away or denounce their application it is difficult to agree that these instructions of terror are absent in them.
3 - Actions of the followers of Islam paint a culture of terror to the secular world. We see some muslims fighting in Thailand, Russia, Myanmar, UK, Spain and USA using guns and bombs in their attempts to establish Islamic States and lately in Syria even chemical gassing on fellow muslims who stood in the way.
Terrorism is associated with Islam because of these multiple links of terror to the religion. Unlike what some choose to believe, it is not an outcome of Propaganda nor media control, but clear displays of the religion's core tenets for establishing the religion.
