Vermont was built from lands claimed by both New Hampshire and New York. The state was originally part of the New Hampshire Grants, which were land grants made by New Hampshire in the mid-18th century. However, New York also claimed the territory, leading to disputes between the two colonies. Vermont eventually became an independent republic before joining the United States as the 14th state in 1791.
