understand what we mean.
Think about it:
Say “Really?” with a rising tone — it sounds curious or surprised.
Now say “Really.” with a flat tone — that feels annoyed, bored, or even sarcastic.
Same Word. Totally different meaning. That’s the power of intonation.
Without it, we’d all sound like robots reading from a script — and good luck trying to tell a joke, ask a question, or show you care.
Intonation is how we:
Make a statement or ask a question (“You’re going.” vs. “You’re going?”)
Show how we feel — excited, upset, skeptical, you name it
Avoid misunderstandings, especially in conversations where tone matters more than Words
If you’ve ever sent a text that said “sure.” and had someone think you were mad... that’s because they couldn’t hear your tone. When we speak, intonation fills that gap.
The thing is it’s not just what you say. It’s how you say it. Intonation is what makes our speech human.
