stone-paved road was the Appian Way, which was built in 312 BC to
speed up the movement of troops to the front of the Second Samnite
War (326-304 BC). Their purpose was military. They made the
movement of troops and the transport of supplies to soldiers at the
front or in garrisons quicker and easier. The stone-paved road made
up 20% of the road network of the Roman Empire.
