ATP is a ready source of energy in cells in your body.Carbohydrates are high energy sources because they provide the body with the simple sugar glucose, which is the preferred energy source for your brain and muscles. When you eat carbohydrates, your digestive system breaks them down into glucose, which quickly travels from your small intestine into your bloodstream. Once in your bloodstream, glucose is carried to your tissues with the help of the pancreatic hormone insulin, which allows your cells to convert glucose into energy.
Carbohydrates are also considered high energy sources because your body can store excess amounts of glucose as glycogen in your liver. When you have not eaten for a while, your liver converts glycogen to glucose and releases it into your bloodstream so it can be used as energy. The amount of glycogen your liver is able to store is limited, however.
