What is the basic reason for the early prolonged absence of humans in the western hemisphere is?

All anthropological evidence collected so far seems to indicate strongly that man evolved in one place on earth - somewhere on the African plains. He spread out slowly from there north, east and west into what is now China. North America (and finally, South America) was kind of a "last stop" in his wanderings.
