Water: There are many rivers that are based in Lorraine; some of the main rivers are Moselle, Meurthe, and Meuse. These are all on the Rhine drainage basin. Water is sourced from the French Alps.

Food: The local speciality is 'Quiche Lorraine'.

Other specialties are:

Pâté Lorrain (chopped pork and veal flavoured with white wine and baked in puff pastry)

Potée Lorraine (a stew of smoked meats and sausages, with cabbage and root vegetables)

Andouille (tripe sausage)

Culture: The main languages are French, Dutch and Catalan. Lorraine has an old Catholic heritage and nearly every village still has its original church.

Economy: Lorraine generates 3.4% of France's GDP and is ranked 8th out of 26th.

Settlement: Except dispersed settlement in the Vosges mountains, traditional farms are linked houses forming linear village.
