Avery Island got its name from the Avery family, who were early settlers in the area. The island was originally called "Avery's Island," named after the plantation owner, James Avery, in the 19th century. The name was eventually shortened to "Avery Island." Today, it is well-known for being the home of the Tabasco sauce factory.
