Mike Powell set the long jump world record at 8.95 meters (29 feet, 4¼ inches) during the 1991 World Championships in Athletics. However, he competed in the Olympics, where he won the gold medal at the 1991 World Championships and the silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, jumping 8.72 meters (28 feet, 7¼ inches) in the latter. His Olympic performance remains one of the highlights of his career.
