The Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka in India were granted world heritage status in 2003. They are inscribed under criteria iii and v. It reflects a long interaction between people and the environment, made evident by the ancient cave paintings within the shelters. It is also closely associated with a hunting and gathering economy as demonstrated in the paintings and the relicts in the local adivasi villages on the periphery of the site.
