They have TV tuners and the ability to decode encryption embedded in TV signals, allowing owners to tune into stations that are otherwise unviewable because of the encryption. It connects to a television and an external source of signal, turning the signal into content which is then displayed on the television screen or other display device. With advancements in technology, STBs have become more complex added with great features. Nowadays advanced STBs come with universal remote controls and allows for home automation. A lot of companies are entering into the STB market these days. Even BBC is coming up with a connected-TV platform STB called YouView which seem to have been stalled for the time being and slated for a 2012 release.
