Ex-Lax is a laxative, a product that softens stool, forces peristalsis (downward movement) in the intestines, and promotes the elimination of stool. Taking more than the recommended dose could likely cause abdominal cramping, painful cramping, loose or watery stools, to diarrhea. As related effects, it could cause nausea, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, and resulting weakness.

Using the "BRAT" diet can help re-regulate the bowel after a bout of diarrhea. BRAT stands for:

  • Bananas
  • Rice
  • Applesauce
  • Toast, dry, no butter or jelly/jam

The items in the BRAT diet replace electrolytes and helps firm up the stool. Although these foods are most used for ill children, they work in adults too.

**If a child has ingested Ex-Lax, consult a physician immediately.
