Why do red blood cells have flexible cell membranes allowing them to change shape easily?

The whole purpose of a red blood cell is to transport oxygen. This requires easy permeability - so the oxygen in the air gets to the hemoglobin inside the red blood cell. The thin membrane facilitates this transportation - a thick membrane would inhibit it.
