Why would a power outage in a hospital be a disaster?

If an operation was part way through when the power failed it would be dangerous for the patient, and patients in intensive care depend on continuous supplies of air, oxygen, whatever. But hospitals have back up power supplies from diesels to make such a disaster very unlikely.
