How did ben ali come into power?

Zine El Abidine Ben Ali came to power in Tunisia in November 1987 after a bloodless coup that ousted longtime President Habib Bourguiba. Ben Ali, who was then the prime minister, staged the coup by declaring Bourguiba unfit for office due to health issues and assumed the presidency. He promised political reforms and modernization but later established an authoritarian regime that lasted until the 2011 Tunisian Revolution.
