Arnis, also known as Eskrima or Kali, is a Filipino martial art that emphasizes weapon-based fighting, particularly with sticks, knives, and other bladed objects, as well as hand-to-hand combat. Its roots can be traced back to the pre-colonial era, where it was practiced by indigenous tribes for self-defense and warfare. During Spanish colonization in the 16th century, practitioners disguised their training as dance to avoid persecution. Today, Arnis has gained international recognition and was declared the national martial art and sport of the Philippines in 2009.
