In civil law, the court settles a disagreement between parties. These cases usually don't go to the Appellate court and are settled by the District court. The procedure goes like this;

plaintiff files a complaint. The case is heard by a judge or jury (only higher $ or circuit). Then, a verdict is given. If the defendant looses, they may appeal to the Appellate court.

In criminal law, a court determines if the person accused of breaking the law is guilty. The procedure goes like this; arrest->preliminary hearing arraignment->indictment->trial-> acquittal (defendant not guilty) or sentencing (guilty)......If there's a hung jury (jury that can't agree on a verdict), there will be a new trial with a new jury. Cases can always be appealed to a higher court.

**Both criminal and civil law are heard by District courts. The judges have greater latitude in handling juvenile cases.
