How are missile fired from submarines?

Missiles are fired from submarines using a system called Vertical Launch System (VLS) or torpedo tubes. In VLS, missiles are housed in vertical silos and ejected using gas generated from a small charge, allowing for rapid launch. In the case of torpedo tubes, missiles are loaded into cylindrical tubes that are flooded with water to create pressure, forcing the missile out of the tube.
